Dev Log - Entry #10

Talking Art

So as you know, recently I decided to make some changes to the game as a whole and as part of these changes, I also decided to change the way I'm doing the art of the game. Before I had the story in mind, I thought I would do things in pixel art but then I realized that what I envision doesn't really sit right with that style. Therefore, I decided go in another direction and illustrate things instead. I'm no expert at art at all so that meant I had to start learning how to do things and experiment with some programs. Luckily, I have super talented friends that were willing to help guiding me along the way as I was getting acquainted with the tools. I still have a long way to go with my drawing skills but I gotta say I'm pretty happy with the stuff I made so far. Check it out :)

Progress

So like I said, I'm changing the style of the game but I'm sticking to the new mechanics so I wanted the art I'm making to make sense with the way the game works. For "Punchy Adventures" I thought it would be fun to make the game mechanics look alive and so I made other food produce to keep him company.

Peapods (Breakables)

Just like the breakable mechanic I introduced in the previous entry, the peapods can either "break" from any direction if they're facing the screen or "break" in a specific direction if hit from the back, facing the opposite direction of the punch. When hit, I imagine the peas inside the pod flying out, leaving it empty and allowing the player to pass. When the fist approaches the peapod while it's looking at it, the pod will close shut before it can get hit. Cool right?

Butter Blocks (Pushables)

Remember the blocks you can push but only in a certain direction? Well these guys are now made of butter! Works the same way as the peapods. If the butter is without a wrapper, it can be pushed in any direction, if it's partially wrapped and looking in a certain direction then it can only be pushed from behind. When hit, the block slides and if the punch gets close when the butter is looking in its direction, it will close and wrap itself up!

Plank & Belly (Passables)

The representation of the passables mechanic, is this couple of pasta pieces. Works the same way as before but now it just looks like pieces of pasta :) Punches can go through from one end and shoot out from the other.

Mushroom (Switch)

Since we're using live characters, I thought it could be interesting to give objects like switches some life too. I'm not working on animations just yet but I couldn't help myself. Check this funny looking character.

Bread & Toast

These 2 are both objects you can step on or ones that block the way but can be moved if a switch is pressed.

Punchy & Fist

Finishing this dev log is none other than Punchy and his oversized fist.

Level Mockup

I also had a chance to create the initial tilemap of the first world in "Punchy Adventures".  Here's a mockup just so you can see what it would look like, minus the background and foreground that are still not ready.

That's all for now. I thinks it's enough :)  Phew!
